Godspell was written by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and opened on Broadway in 1971, continuing on with multiple touring productions and revivals.
The musical is structured around parables and the Gospel of Matthew, however heavily features 8 non-biblical characters who perform the parables - each with non-biblical names. All characters remain onstage for entirety of the production.
'Beautiful City' has been rewritten a few times for the production, with the most famous and well known recording by Hunter Parish in 2011 New Broadway Cast Recording. There are also upbeat versions of the song available and sometimes preferred!
This is a song of hope.
